How to Be Relatable Online Without Oversharing→
The Trick to Being “Relatable” Online (Even If You Think You’re Boring)
If you’ve ever stared at the blinking cursor thinking, “My life is so normal, who would even care?” — this one's for you.
Because you don’t need to be interesting.
You need to be specific.
And that one shift? It makes all the difference in your content.

Relatability Isn’t a Personality Trait — It’s a Strategy
Here’s the mistake most people make:
They think they have to perform relatability.
Overshare. Downplay their success. Try to sound like everyone else.
But relatability doesn’t come from being vague or universally likable.
It comes from being detailed enough that people see themselves in your story.
It’s the difference between:
“I love Diet Coke.” vs.
“I crack open a 2 p.m. Diet Coke like it’s a ritual, because I earned it.”
or
“I love Taylor Swift.” vs.
“I cried during Long Live at the Eras Tour like a little teenage girl.”
The more specific you are, the more real you feel.
And the more real you feel, the more people want to stick around.
The Specificity Formula
Start with something you already do or love — then add 10% more detail:
→ Favorite food?
Not just “I love pasta,” but “I’m a sucker for boxed Annie’s mac and cheese when I’m on deadline.”
→ Your routine?
Not “I read every morning,” but “I get 10 pages in while my toddler eats a granola bar and sings the Bluey theme.”
→ A strong opinion?
Not “I hate clutter,” but “If my kitchen counter has more than three things on it, I can’t breathe.”
The goal isn't to be quirky or niche for the algorithm — it’s to be memorable and human.
It’s Not About Matching — It’s About Resonating
You don’t have to find people who drink Diet Coke at 2 p.m.
You have to remind someone what their version of that moment is.
As I said on the podcast:
“It may not be that every single person relates to your 2 PM Diet Coke. It’s more like the ritual of taking a break and that first sip of your favorite drink.”
That’s the story they’ll remember.
That’s the detail that makes you sticky.
So… You’re Not Boring.
You’re just skipping the good parts.
If you want to connect with your audience, don’t share everything — just zoom in.
Zoom in on the texture.
Zoom in on the moment.
Zoom in on what it’s really like to live your life.
That’s where the magic lives.
